Monkey Bar now at Indiranagar ~A Restaurant Review

You want to monkey around with some good food,  drinks and of course some good company and get twice the excitement? Then Monkey Bar part 2 is the place to unwind. Where is it located?..... strategically located on bustling 12th Main Indiranagar - so the place cannot be missed.

The interiors are exposed brick wall strung with the quirky wall posters and to add to the unconventional look there is a scooter and a model plane making a presence from the roof – yup just look up while you drink and eat.  The monkey bar has a nice mezzanine floor and basement to count in space enough for some drunken monkeys to prance around. The emphasis is definitely on fresh, innovative and affordable, in a cool yet laid back, vibe atmosphere.

Well let's get to the serious part which is the eats: We started off with some Pirogies, the Polish version of the pan-fried momos filled with chicken, celery and jalapeno and the spicy Italian pork sausage mince - this time chicken trumped pork for me. You can’t get  enough of the chicken pirogies that had everything you needed - meat, crunch from the celery, heat from the jalapeno and tangy from sour cream which came along as a dip.
Chicken and Pork Pirogies
Next up was the Tempura Calamari, well nothing wrong with that one,  one can bite into the crunch from the crispy batter which is glazed in green curry and then drizzled with some wasabi mayo and fresh scallions for the added freshness.
Tempura Calamari
Crab Rangoon

The Crab Rangoon written on the little black board was something that caught my attention apart from the "Death sauce" placed in a rather convincing way its hard to resist it - the sauce is a deadly thing in the cutlery holder of every table and I dare anyone to try this.... the spice level definitely takes you to levels you wouldn't have EVER sensed AND I mean that.
The Crab Rangoon is a fried wonton stuffed with crab and cream cheese. You wouldn't have a count of how many have popped into the mouth once the dish comes onto the table - 'Mind You'.

Then came these cute little cuddles of Goan Chorizo Pao,  for those who love the vinegary taste of the sausage meat against some freshly baked paos which are hardly the size of the palms mmm mmm mmm!!! You may consider ordering one more plate of it so as to avoid a scramble on the table..(that’s how finger licking good these paos are)

Goan Chorizo Pao

Pandi Curry and Pita Bread

The most ordered and well sought after dish is the Pandi Curry with the Pita Bread, this is one pork dish that will definitely delighted by one and all ordering this Porky dish – delish is the word.

Burgers  are meant to be messy, juicy with all the right condiments all neatly piled up. But this burger is called the BBQ Burger  - a sloppy joe filled with juicy pork and bbq sauce enough to make your tummy sing.

If you can't do away from the table without the little of a rice in your repertoire then there is a very hearty 'Parsee Orderlies’... mutton curry served with savory rice and finished with a sprinkling of Amul Cheese. The Berry Pulao  is a simple style pulav with morsels of  chicken and a generous measure of nicely caramelized onions.

BBQ Pork Burger

I did not have desserts due to an SOS call from home so just had to rush out, never the less my bloggers meet at Monkey Bar was more than satisfying!! But a recommendation is the Chocolate Pot De Creme which is a chocolate lover's haven in every bite. Also let me mention I did not try any of their alcoholic drinks as I’m 'preggers' and stayed safe at a simple Mojito Mocktail. For those wanting to give it their shot with some good drinks I recommend the Ginger Rogers a refreshing concoction of ginger ale, ginger and peach syrup that’s comes in a coconut shaped ceramic pot. Red Riding Wood  made from Vodka, Fresh Plum, Passion fruit  and Apple juice.  Wild Leaf is another one to try which is a refreshing drink made from lime leaves and passion fruit.

Well Monkey Bar has raised his itself in terms of the space and lives upto his expectations in terms of food drinks and ambiance. So they are serious at Monkeying this Bar Up.

California Pizza Kitchen Small Cravings Festival

Thai Chicken Satay
California Pizza Kitchen introduces their Short Eats, Small Cravings festival which kick started on the 5th of March and is on till the end of the March. And since then some of the short eats remains on the menu. CPK is a chain widely known for its innovative  and non traditional pizza, they also serve various kinds of pasta, salads and desserts. The last month the fest was all about showcasing a set of 8 appetizers which are not on their menu. The idea is to bring their discerning patrons a taste of the best the professionals at CPK have innovated.

Bocconcini & Cherry Tomato Bruschetta
The Pan Asian Style Chicken Cakes, are crunchy little morsels and goes well with your drinks. The Crispy Mac and Cheese is a good twist to the kids menu. The regular Mac and Cheese which is then made into small b little balls, coated with panko bread crumbs and then deep fried. Anything deep fried is a definite hit for anyone in general, and this appetizer just made us go for a second.

Chicken Taquitos

Crispy Mac & Cheese

The short eats festival had the following dishes to try Bocconcini & Cherry Tomato Bruschetta a good bite into a soft boncoccini against the tardiness of the tomatoes with a crunch. Black Bean Quesadillas, which  is a simple. Thai Chicken Satay, an appetizer, where I found the peanut dip too good to resist with the perfectly grilled chicken. The Serrano Cheese Toast, which were pretty ordinary cheesy toasts with a bite of the chili and onion and nothing really to rave about.

Serrano Cheese Toast
The Chicken Taquitos are plateful of crispy rolls with a filling of chicken served with a dip of a good salsa. All these appetizers come at a price of INR149. And after all the samplers we had on the table, one cannot end a meal without going for a slice of pizza. We had the

Black Bean Quesadilla

The desserts at CPK are worth not only a mention but worth a dig, because you'd be licking your spoon with an indulgence that would leave you in nothing short of a "sugar high". The CPK signature Red Velvet Cake and Tiramisu are their fastest moving and I wouldn't disagree on that. The Red Velvet Cake are layers of red cake with a creamy vanilla cream cheese frosting.

The Tiramisu beckons to all Coffee and Chocolate lovers. The tag line of this dessert is "pick me up" is an indulgence of Italian Mascarpone, with lady fingers soaked in Kahlua and espresso, topped with a Coffee sabayon and grated chocolate. This is my personal favorite due to my chocolate and coffee inclination above all flavors.

Two new entrants to the dessert menu is the White Chocolate Praline Mousse, bound to be a hit. The praline base is enriched with  pistachio and then covered in a decadent chocolate ganche. CPK goes tropical with the other new dessert which is the Coconut Banana Cake another goodness of the coconut and banana creme with a side curlicue of whipped cream.

Now if you were to not go on a gastronomic high then for sure I'd be lying! Try CPK for their new entrants on the menu and enjoy some excitingly new flavors this year! I'm sure to hear great reviews for CPK, let me know your experiences too!!!! Cheers.

Barleyz ~ A Restaurant Review

Barleyz is known as the Beer Garden. It was crowded with the HIPPEST crowd on a Saturday night, just like it should be. And no wonder it's one of the 'places to be'.  Barleyz is situated in Koramangala opposite the Sony World Signal and spread over 30,000 sq ft across two floora. The place is stylish in its own way with a starry sky above you just to set you to a relaxing evening. There are, however, wooden benches, islands of greenery, examples of handsome garden furniture, soft lights and grills for a barbecue to add to the overall fun night.

I was surprised by the kind of crowd that came by, you have the ones that have come to a place for the perfect family outing with the kids. They get to enjoy a nice kids play area that will keep them occupied for sure. The bar menu is rather limited for now as the microbrewery license is yet to come, and when it does what is expected to be a hit is the fruit beer that will be infused with local flavors such as coriander, jaggery, coconut, apple cider, along with the English and Belgian Style Ale. But you could still be spoilt with the
available choices. We that is me and my husband tried the Bar Man Special Mocktail which was a refreshing kiwi aerated drink.
The food emphasis is largely what people order with their drinks. Their BBQ non vegetarian and vegetarian starters or finger foods like the Lamb Seekh, Paprika Chicken, Harissa Fish, Garlic Prawns, Murg Dhaniya Tikka, Stuffed Tandoori Mushrooms, Paneer Saunfiani Tikka are all subtly flavored.

The Malai Brocolli, Chatpate Aloo,Thai Crispy Vegetables were also relatively simple yet flavorful  By the time the starters were done we were sort of done in our tummies. Yet the Chef insisted we try the Coca-Spanish Pizza with Chorizo, tomatoes, prawns, manchego cheese baked and topped with pepper aioli. It was indeed a delight and a piquant mix of flavors and textures to the palate.

Of course there are other options when it comes to the mains such as the Chicken Biriyani, Dal Makhani, Tandoori Breads, Punjabi Lamb Curry which all seem rather pedestrian as compared to their starters and in all fairness could give this a miss. From the small bowl section of the menu, we tried the Spaghetti with the Mascarpone cheese and Bacon rashers - an absolute hit and definitely a lasting memory for me. And for dessert not that we had too many choices and we tried the chocolate mousse, now one couldn't go wrong with that. And with that Chocola-tey goodness in our mouths that brought us to the end of a fabulous weekend night out...

Trader Vic's Mai Tai Lounge ~ New Menu Review

My day began with the Monday blues and to hit the blue show on the road, I went to Trader Vic's Mai Tai Lounge to review their latest Menu additions. Mai Tai is a fine place to dine, its a perfect getaway during the weekdays and more so on the weekends. Located by the lake at Bangalore's newest lifestyle mall -The Brigade Orion Mall, Mai Tai sets itself apart from other lounges in the city. So for my Monday afternoon, this was the just the place I needed to be.

The menu hosts some interesting dishes 'From the Wok'  such as the Mango Chili Tenderloin, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken,  Bbq Vegetables and Tofu, Thai Red and Green Curries, Noodles and Fried Rice. The other new section which is New is 'From the Grill'  and  I chose the grill over the wok, my decision was bound. The menu has been expanded on requests made by loyal customers, is what I was told on my little chit chat with Mr. Priyank Chouhan the Area Manager for South India and Mr. Gautam Yadav the General Manager for Mai Tai Lounge. Mr. Priyank mentioned "that when customers go through the menu they look for something they are used to, thus there was a need created to expand and do a little tweaking so that we give what customers look for".

My de'jeuner started off with an absolutely refreshing drink the Queen Charlotte Fruit Punch, a luscious fruit drink, highly recommended for non-alcoholic drinkers for an afternoon for the rush of the fruit and the fizz that's in it.

Along with my drink I was served the appetizers such as the Huli Huli Chicken, a Hawaiian preparation of succulent morsels of chicken with a tangy flavor skewered and grilled to perfection. You'd get a sweet, tangy  and a slightly spicy note at the end of it along with crunch note from the grilled green pepper which  just makes it even more desirable by the bite.

Huli Huli Chicken
Next up was the Cilantro and Scallion Prawns which was tinged with the charcoal taste, the prawns were moist with the right amount of cilantro and scallions paste coming through and served alongside a wasabi mayo dip. I rate this dish as mediocre especially because my mind was biased on the chicken I tasted.

Cilantro and Scallion Prawns

Another memorable appetizer was the Island Corn Cakes, again bite sized corn cakes served on a piece of buttered toast. The corn cakes are creamy with the sweetness of the corn kernels against the much need crunch of the toast. Another appetizer were you couldn't stop at one!.

Island Corn Cakes
For the mains, by far the best I have had was the Senor Pico Chicken which was a boneless piece of chicken served with some good mashed potatoes on a fiery pepper coulis with a corn salsa. All in all I'd give the dish a 10/10. The condiments were just right on the plate against a good portion of the chicken.

Senor Pico Chicken
And to end my lunch affair, I had the Coffee Creme Brulee, the flavor was bang on, but would have loved a bit more crack to the sugar. But seriously, it really didn't matter, the bitterness of the sugar and the coffee creaminess beneath, and being the coffee lover that I am, anything with coffee is fine by me. And that ended my afternoon by the poolside at Mai Tai, but I'll be back for more especially to check out more 'From the Grill'.

Pasha Bar and Grill, Alila Hotel Bangalore ~ A Review

When you walk into the lobby of the Alila Hotel everything you set you eyes on is vainglorious. Alila Hotel is line of 5 star business hotels located in Whitefield and overlooks the Varthur Lake. I was promptly escorted to the 5th floor, right to where Pasha Bar and Grill is located. Once you step out of the elevator your mesmerized by the pool that's open to the sky which is all an extended part of Pasha.

So quick exchange of greetings with the Director of Food and Beverage Mr.Rahul Makhija and he took me around on a quick tour around Pasha which basically caters to the IT crowd around Whitefield area and also to the posh gated communities that are in the surroundings. Pasha presents an opportunity of that after hour work pit stop as well as a sit down dinner indulgence. I liked everything about Pasha, its modern , stylish and a perfect destination for any occasion  What particularly interests me is their long spread out bar counter - "the spaciousness" unlike other places where the bar counter is rather a restricted portion of the restaurant. There's variety of seating that is offered, by the poolside, outside on the deck, inside the bar with rounded tables or on the bar stool by the bar counter.

The menu is quite limited, to be a lot more precise, the menu which is Indian hosts Indian Kebabs, rotis, rice, vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries with the combinations changing for 6 days of the week. So what you have on Monday night is what you'd get if you return on Friday in the same week. I must say the meal I had was flavourful, unpretentious capturing the taste of  the Delhi -UP region. The drinks menu here is extensive and there's no mistaking that it's a bar.We started with a round of kebabs the Sarson Mahi Tikka,  Cottage Cheese Rolls, Chicken Yogurt and Silver Leaf Kebab and the Griddled Lamb Kebab. The spice levels for each of the non vegetarian kebabs were just right and rightly went my drink a strawberry and vodka drink called the Twins which was pink, fancy, sweet with a hint of heat from the chili right in your throat. And not to mention the kebabs keep coming while you still enjoy your conversation, and by the way if you have second and third round of kebabs they are still warm to one's satisfaction. We then moved onto hot basket of rotis, phulkas and naans paired with some rich Murg Awadhi  Korma which just did it for me. I also got to taste the Nihari Gosht which were tender and spicy. Along with your curries, the lentils are served, I'm a huge fan of Dal Makhani which is simply heavenly with hot rotis. Next up was an aromatic biriyani the Hyderabadi Murg Dum Biriyani which was very needed after all the protein, fragrant and making it a treat to the palate. Coming to its wake, an interesting end to the meal which left me in total satisfaction was the Coffee Kulfi, if not a satiation. An interesting end to a pleasant food experience.

Pasha Bar and Grill is open for Dinner from Monday to Saturday from 6pm onwards
The Dinner is priced at INR999, exclusive of taxes

Pasha also opens to a scrumptious buffet brunch on a Lazy Sunday from 11am to 4pm which includes a dip in the pool while enjoying yourself to an elaborate carte.

Estia ~ The Meditterenean Bliss at Aloft Hotel Bangalore

You walk into a decor where it allures you to a warm and balmy shades of blues and oranges. Nice textured walls, wooden chairs and tables, cobbled floor in its true taste of the Mediterranean  The service and the food combined just made the whole experience satisfying. The menu hosts a line up of cuisine featuring the Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Moroccan  Egyptian, Croatian and Portuguese. So we enjoyed the expert,y prepared food with a Turkish Mezze Starter starter of Hummus, Muhammara, the mezze platter which had 4 dips - the hummus, tzatziki, sundried tomatoes with rosemary and muhammara served with some Pita Bread.

Whilst we were engaged in trying out platter of dips, there arrives our plate of crunchy Phyllo Cigars filled with Spinach and Feta cheese. These crunchy starters were quick to disappear as the creaminess of the spinach and feta with a bite of the phyllo was simply irresistible  Next up were the Jumbo Prawns sauteed in chili oil with a hint of black pepper which was much required. Succulent prawns with the right amount of spice to the dish. By then we were partly full on the tummy.

Mezze Platter, Phyllo Cigars and Jumbo Prawns sauteed with Chili Oil

The Executive Chef - Chef Biswal then joins in for a for a tete-a tete on how the menu was engineered, where some food is sourced from, especially the beef which is imported to meet the quality of a steak. Chef  Biswal then departs to bring in his mains which were the Angus Rib Eye Steak, with classic onion rings, beans, potato gratin with a pepper sauce. The Steak was juicy and moist on a bed of potato gratin which was infinitely liked, the crunch of the beans and onion rungs to render and the dish was complete like steak is to be! We also got to taste the Adana Kebabs which is authentic lamb kebabs served with some aromatic saffron rice.

Angus Rib Eye Steak with Potato Gratin, Green Beans and Onion Rings

The Kebabs though were a tad bit dry, but the dish still lingers on with the rice and tomato gravy being superb and spot on. And then finally, the Desserts - a trio of Tiramisu, Baklava and Rose Petal Ice Cream.

Lamb Kebab with Aromatic Saffron Rice

Well we definitely licked our spoons to the ice cream, the other two desserts were a slight amiss as on compared to the cold, yummy Ice-cream. Never the less, we were thoroughly entertained and were on the brink of a food coma.........One Happy Family!!!

Tiramisu, Rose Petal Ice Cream and Baklava

Dinner for two excluding alcohol or beverages would cost about INR2000 (excluding taxes)

DELIZIOSO - Italian Food Fest @Bene Sheraton Bangalore

I was invited to review the Delizioso - The Italian Food fest which is already running since November 9th, 2012 and will go on till November 18th, 2012. Italian Cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines in the world. While Italian cuisine is generally associated with pastas and rich, heavy foods, each region of Italy--including the central-northern region of Lombardy--is distinct in its "staple" foods and quintessential dishes which is what this Fest is featuring. The Lombardy region is best known for its dairy products, including the region's world-famous Gorgonzola cheese.Lombardy is bordered by Switzerland to the north, and it includes part of the Alps.

Lombardy cuisine consists primarily of rice as the foundation of hearty dishes. Risotto, an Italian rice dish, originated a typical Milanese dish (Milan is the major city of the Lombard region), and has gained international recognition as a main entree across a wide variety of menus outside of the Italian gastronomical scope. At Bene the menu is crafted by the Celebrity Chef Enrico Fiorentini with popular dishes from the regular menu at Sheraton Milan Malpensa.
So while waiting for my rendezvous with the Chef, I scanned through the menu trying to figure out the dishes which of course most of it I couldn't quite decipher. And just when I was  thinking what would be best to order, the Chef arrives with a bang, and before you know I was enjoying tales of his experience. It's simple with Chef Enrico, he's got the humor with some sarcasm along with it, but we were enjoying some hearty laughs and Oh! did we. Chef then departs temporarily saying "I'm gonna cook you something, and all you have to do is eat alright?". Well that's a deal alright. - indeed a fine one I thought to myself.
The first meal was an Antipasti Platter which set the stage to the meal, as colourful and delicious as it should be was a medley of a Insalatina d’orzo con verdurine e cappesante dorate - Barley salad with garden vegetables sprigs & pan seared sea scallops and Tartare di Porcini trifolati e quenelle di ricotta alle erbe, piadinetta (V) - Tartare of sautéed cepes mushrooms with a herbed ricotta cheese quenelle with  a portion of Il pesce d’acqua dolce in 3 modi Marinato, Leggermente Affumicato e tartare - Three different ways we do serve the “Salmon” in Lombardy Sea salt & sugar marinated, lightly smoked & quite raw.
Gli Anti Pasti  - Appetisers

Then came the Primi Piatti Di Pasta which is the Pasta course which again was a brilliant. Creamy Risotto, fresh ravioli and to die for saffron flavoured potatoes with the cheese foam.(Tortelli di zucca alla Mantovana con gli amaretti e la mostarda (V) - Pumpkin ravioli with a touch of amaretti cookies & candied-spiced fruits, Gnocchetti di patate allo zafferano sulla loro terra, germogli e schiuma al Parmigiano (V) - Saffron flavored potato dumplings served on their own soil, sprouts and Parmesan cheese foam and the Carnaroli ai funghi, infuso di porcini e tartara di gamberoni all’erba ciopollina - Mushroom risotto, cepes infusion and chives prawn tartare).

The next course of course was the Le Carni - the Meat Mains, by then I was stuffed and Chef mockingly asks "Your already full??, but I have just begun"....with a laugh. I was tantalized with L’ossobuco in gremolada secondo la ricetta originale “MA” di tacchino con risotto alla Milanese - Stewed turkey ossobuco with tomato and vegetable sauce, served with saffron risotto and a portion of the Costolette d’agnello in panuria di polenta al Parmigiano - Butter pan fried lamb chops in a herbed polenta crumbing.

The glorious meal came to end with the Lombardy Sweet Cuddles, another platter of the desserts hosting Chestnut flour, air dried fruits and nuts cake served with chocolate ice cream, Red wine poached pear served with double cream & Parmesan cheese ice cream and anise egg free biscuit,Double chocolate & mascarpone cheese mousse with “Brutti e Buoni” hazelnut crunchy bisquit and Polenta & Dark chocolate timbale with bitter orange marmalade. These tasting portions of the dessert were insanly brilliant. But my story doesn't end here. The Chef came back to the table, and we continued on his tales and traveled right across from Milan to Egypt to Syria to Dubai to Korea and now at India to realise I had spent a good three hours chatting and full on the belly.

I bid my good bye to the Chef and he surprises me with a parting gift, a box of Srbisolona - A typical Italian Tart to be had with tea or coffe and a little something for the journey back home.  And I was obviosly aww-ed!!
So in short my experience was worth it and Chef Enrico knows how to entertain his gifts for sure.  So head out to the Bene and make the most out of the weekend while it lasts.

United Flavours of India - 40 Day Journey at the Lalit Ashok Bangalore

We craved for Punjabi Food with the non vegetarian dishes and rotiyaan, the 24/7 multi cuisine restaurant at the Lalit Ashok made our bellies delight.

L-R- Chef K.P Singh, Bhuni Hui Chaatein Kheema de Naal,Meat Waale Chaawal,Kheeme Koyal ke Masala

Chef K.P Singh brings to you robust and rich flavors from Punjab all present at the buffet for the next 40 days. I had a long chat with Chef K.P Singh and learnt that he had the opportunity to spend a good one month in the villages of Amritsar to learn the cuisine, to learn the way the Punjabis make their food at home, or at the Dhabas "Food to the Punjabis is important, it is translated as brotherhood, togetherness and happiness", Chef KP recalls in his expedition at Punjab. Keeping that in mind he has wanted to bring forth those experiences and tastes for the event at the Lalit Ashok all this month.
Rotiyaan
I asked Chef for his recommended options to try in the buffet, so for starters I tried the Stuffed Gajjar Ka Parathas with Kheeme Koyal ke Masala, a whole quail cooked in Mutton Kheeme along with some spices, rendered down in tomato and onions based gravy cooked over a prolonged period for the burst of flavors. Next up we tried the Bhuni Hui Chaatein Kheema de Naal, which are mutton chops cooked in a spicy and robust masala, with the tender meat simply coming off the bone.

Punjabi Kadhi Pakoda
The Meat Waale Chaawal is also subtle and flavorful with the soft Punjabi Kadhi Pakodas which I strongly reccommend. One cannot miss a meal with the ubiquitous Sarson Ka Saag and Roti with some Gurr and Safed Makhan and of course the Dal Makhani, Paneer Wale Chole with Puri. To end the lunch I tried the Urad dal ka Halwa and  Malpua soaked in sugar syrup which are heavenly.

Ural Dal di Pinni
By the end of the whole ordeal I was overloaded, but happy! All the reason to go back and try some more of the upcoming culinary dishes from the Bundelkhand Jugalbandi which is the Khajuraho Cusine ( 21st to 30 Oct ) and the Shaahi Mewad the Rajasthani Cuisine (11th Oct to 20th Oct). All this only at the Lalit Ashok till the 30th of Oct at the 24/7 Restaurant.
